The Weather today

In his later years, my grandfather took up the habit of writing a journal. He documented his and my grandmothers every-day, the weather, the walks, visits, and a variety of other things. He wrote in his journal to remember. In his last journal, his declining health became apparent. After his passing, my grandmother took over the journal and kept writing every day in it throughout the remainder of the year. She followed the manner of style and subjects my grandfather wrote about, documenting peoples visits, the weather, and her daily activities. The journal gave her a dialogue with him. kept him close to her.

Alongside entries from the journal are images from my grandmother's camera. My grandmother was not a photographer nor was photography something I related to her. The images were all made with her early 2000´s digital point-and-shoot camera. She took most of them herself or in some instances had other family members take them for her when she was or wanted to be present in the images herself. With her little camera, she captured images of moments and observations so ordinary and self-evident that they sometimes could be seen as pointless. but in fact, later, I have come to realise that those are the sort of images that are the most precious. In the same way, my grandfather documented their every-day in his journal my grandmother did the same through her camera. Within the every-day there is beauty and, in the case of my grandparents, the undying love they shared.

We went down to the shore, Inga walked by the ocean as she usually does but I stayed in the car. Weather, light breeze, and zero degrees.

Inga made waffles, hoping that someone would drop by. I went for a short walk today. Magga called and Inga invited them to come and have coffee and waffles.  Everyone came except Pálmi. It was really nice. Weather like yesterday, light breeze, sun and some warmth.

Inga went with Grétar to Church in Háteigskirkja at 8 o´clock. I was feeling weak, so I stayed at home. Magga invited us for dinner, the dinner was great as always. Jón Helgi drove us home, he helped us with the TV so we could watch the Icelandic film that had been shown tonight. Weather, cold, and a light breeze.

Inga has been baking all day, making my favourite cream cake and other refreshments. She is preparing as it is my birthday today. She set the table and made this fine birthday party. My family, kids, and grandkids came, all except Fanney, who is in Denmark. She called to wish me a happy birthday. This has been a wonderful day, to have received all this love warms my heart.

We did not go for our weekly morning coffee to Magga this morning, I wasn´t feeling good, had a headache, etc. I spent most of the day in bed. Magga came by on her bike, it was nice. Good weather today.

April 10th.

Eiríkur and Helga came to visit and brought me a birthday present. Then Sigga and Gunnur came to check on how I was feeling. The last to come to see how I was doing was Magga. She then cleaned the windows from the outside, only she could do that. The weather today is good, sun and no winds. I am very weak.

I borrowed the sewing machine from Magga and used it to fix Jón Helgi´s pants. Helga, Eirkíkur, and Sóley then came and had dinner with me. I gave Eiríkur your slippers, they fit him perfectly.

Today there was no sun, but the temperature was about 14 degrees. Magga and Gunnur caught four big trouts. We went to Eyjan and walked around the nesting grounds; I walked the same areas as yesterday. Went home at about 4 o´clock. They marked 110 nests in Þúfuhólminn. We had lamb for dinner.

Today the sun has been shining and the day has been really warm. I went out for a walk. I will go with Jón Helgi to a summerhouse in the countryside tomorrow. Magga and Pálmi are there already. Today it is 3 months since you left, I don´t know how they have passed.

Our wedding day is today. Ella came and went with me to the cemetery to see you. I brought you flowers, didn´t you see me? Then I went with Magga and Pálmi to a concert in Harpa, that was very nice.

Now the year has passed. Ella came for a visit around noon. Then at about 5 o´clock, Jón Helgi picked me up. The food Magga made was lovely. Turkey with all kinds of fancy side dishes. The weather tonight was beautiful. Many loud fireworks. Jón Helgi and Ingibjörg drove me home together. I miss you very much.
